Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are a broad group of compounds with varying physicochemical and toxic properties. Among POP, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are two families of hydrophobic compounds sharing some similar environmental properties such as hydrophobicity, persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity. Experimental shift in diet Delta13C: A potential tool for ecophysiological studies in marine bivalves ArchiMer

To test the potential of diet switching experiments in ecophysiological studies of marine invertebrates, stable carbon isotope ratios were measured at different seasons in the gonad, adductor muscle, digestive gland and gills of scallops (Pecten maximus) and oysters (Crassostrea gigas) held for 15 days on a constant diet of phytoplankton depleted in 13C. The aim of this study was to determine if differences in carbon incorporation could be detected among species, seasons and organs, and if so, whether it was consistent with their known energy-allocation patterns. Plastics are persistent synthetic polymers that accumulate as waste in the marine environment. Microplastic (MP) particles are derived from the breakdown of larger debris or can enter the environment as microscopic fragments. Because filter-feeder organisms ingest MP while feeding, they are likely to be impacted by MP pollution. To assess the impact of polystyrene microspheres (micro-PS) on the physiology of the Pacific oyster, adult oysters were experimentally exposed to virgin micro-PS (2 and 6 µm in diameter; 0.023 mg·L−1) for 2 mo during a reproductive cycle. Size-selective fishing gear and life history evolution in the Northeast Arctic cod ArchiMer

Industrial fishing has been identified as a cause for life history changes in many harvested stocks, mainly because of the intense fishing mortality and its size-selectivity. Because these changes are potentially evolutionary, we investigate evolutionarily stable life-histories and yield in an energy-allocation state-dependent model for Northeast Arctic cod Gadus morhua. We focus on the evolutionary effects of size-selective fishing because regulation of gear selectivity may be an efficient management tool.
